Join us November 8th for Bethesda's Reformation Concert!

The Bethesda Lutheran Church family invites you to join us for stirring music of Bach and James Whitbourn on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 4:30 p.m. Our 40-voice Bethesda Bach Choir and soloists, conductor Kathryn Nichols, accompanied by an ensemble of period instruments led by noted violinist Daniel Lee, will bring this ancient music to life. Come experience it for yourself!

All assembled will join in singing a festive setting of A Mighty Fortress Is Our God accompanied by trumpeters, Katie Hillstrom and Luke Fox and organist Mark Brombaugh.

Bach's Missa Brevis consists of settings of only the Kyrie and Gloria. Soloists Margaret Astrup, Sarah Blaze, Gene Stenger, and Hernan Berisso illuminate phrases of the Gloria, framed by exuberant choral movements with strings and sprightly oboes (Priscilla Herreid and Remy Libbrecht).

Daniel Lee will be featured playing Bach's Violin Sonata in G, a flamboyant work in the Italian style with contrasting expressive slow movements and virtuosic fast sections.

James Whitbourn's anthem All Shall Be Amen and Alleluia offers a nod to the season of All Saints and will provide an uplifting close to the concert, accompanied by the surround-sound of piano (Jonathan Weiss), organ, cymbals and tam-tam.

Serving Our Community Through Music

For over 30 years, the Bethesda Music Series has presented 4–5 concerts each season featuring local and international musicians while raising funds for area social service organizations and sharing great music with the people of New Haven.

Wanting to reach out to the community in as inclusive a manner as possible, we have made all concerts free and open to the public. A freewill offering is collected and donations are accepted. Faithful donors underwrite the expenses of the series, allowing us to give 100% of all freewill offerings to the charities.

The Music Series has played to thousands of people presenting a range of music including Caribbean steel drums, harpsicord and organ, choir concerts, operas, string quartets, and much more. Although the program changes, what stays constant is the dedication to presenting artistic experiences of the highest quality in a welcoming environment.
