Giving Garden

A major focus of the Bethesda Giving Garden is giving the produce to Christian Community Action who make it available to those in need. Our mission to grow enough produce for our congregation and to donate to a New Haven food bank has been very successful. We delivered over 100 pounds of food to Christian Community Action during the last harvest season in addition to offering our congregation baskets overflowing with delicious vegetables and herbs.

Our harvest and workdays are Sunday mornings before church and one more day during the week… With the help of the Sunday school children and many adults, we planted a variety of vegetables. Last year, we started in the early spring with ‘cut and come again’ mesclun mix lettuces, arugula, and spinach for greens. Then came the sugar snap peas, green beans, jalapeno peppers, sweet peppers, eggplant, at least 5 varieties of mostly heirloom tomatoes, carrots, butternut squash, cucumbers, basil, and kale. We planted a lovely herb garden that should be very prolific and exciting as children and adults become aware of the wonderful difference in food herbs can make.

Everyone is most welcome to lend a hand in the garden, as there is much work, fun, and learning always going on. Please contact Janis Underwood (underwood60@sbcglobal.net) (203.387.4760) for more information or to volunteer.
