The Bethesda Music Series presents Antonio Vivaldi’s famous Gloria and the world premiere of A New England Requiem by New Haven-based composer Scott Perkins on Sunday, May 21, at 4pm. The hour-long program will take place at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 450 Whitney Avenue, New Haven. The Bethesda Choir, joined by the choir of United Church on the Green, soloists and orchestra, will be directed by Caesar Storlazzi and Lars Gjerde. A New England Requiem was commissioned for this concert, supported by friends of music at Bethesda, and includes poetry by 19th-century New England writers, paired with traditional texts from the requiem mass. The work features captivating melodies, lush harmonies, and beautiful writing for voices, organ, and orchestra. Connecticut native Scott Perkins enjoys a multifaceted career as an international prize-winning composer, a versatile performer, an award-winning scholar, and a music educator. His music has been praised by critics for publications including the Washington Post (“dramatic,” “colorful”) and the Washington Times (“perfectly orchestrated,” “haunting,” “a remarkable and welcome musical surprise”).
The event is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be collected to support the next season of the Bethesda Music Series, featured in a national church magazine for its efforts to raise funds for New Haven charities (see “Singing for a Cause” in The Lutheran Magazine, December 2012). A reception will follow the concert.
